Topological Characterization of Signal in Brain Images

چکیده
We present a novel framework for characterizing signals in images using techniques from computational algebraic topology. This technique is general enough for dealing with noisy multivariate data including geometric noise. The main tool is persistent homology which can be encoded in persistence diagrams. These are scatter plots of paired local critical values of the signal. One of these diagrams visually shows how the number of connected components of the sublevel sets of the signal changes. The use of local critical values of a function differs from the usual statistical parametric mapping framework, which mainly uses the mean signal in quantifying imaging data. Our proposed method uses all the local critical values in characterizing the signal and by doing so offers a completely new data reduction and analysis framework for quantifying the signal. As an illustration, we apply this method to a 1D simulated signal and 2D cortical thickness data.

Structural Findings in the Brain MRI of Patients with Acute Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Background: Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning may lead to hypoxic/anoxic injury and eventually ischemic encephalopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has a well-recognized role in assessment of the severity of brain damage caused by CO poisoning. In this study, we aimed to present and analyze the structural abnormalities in the brain MRI and especially in diffusion weighted MRI (DWI) images in ...
متن کاملHistogram analysis- a useful tool for tissue characterization in brain CT
Introduction: Pixel value in computed tomography (CT) gives the average linear attenuation coefficient of the scanned material in the path of the x-ray beam, being normalized to that of water. It is known that attenuation coefficient or HU value is a function of the chemical characteristic of the material and of the x-ray energy. The CT image shows the HU value by a shade of gr...
متن کاملTopological Characterization of Signal in Brain Images Using Min-Max Diagrams
We present a novel computational framework for characterizing signal in brain images via nonlinear pairing of critical values of the signal. Among the astronomically large number of different pairings possible, we show that representations derived from specific pairing schemes provide concise representations of the image. This procedure yields a "min-max diagram" of the image data. The represen...
متن کاملTOPOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION FOR FUZZY REGULAR LANGUAGES
We present a topological characterization for fuzzy regular languages: we show that there is a bijective correspondence between fuzzy regular languages and the set of all clopen fuzzy subsets with finite image in the induced fuzzy topological space of Stone space (Profinite space), and then we give a representation of closed fuzzy subsets in the induced fuzzy topological space via fuzzy regular...
متن کاملSignal Intensity of High B-value Diffusion-weighted Imaging for the Detection of Prostate Cancer
Background: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a main component of multiparametric MRI for prostate cancer detection. Recently, high b value DWI has gained more attention because of its capability for tumor characterization. Objective: To assess based on histopathological findings of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided prostate biopsy as a reference, an...

The patient was a nine-year-old girl with prolonged focal seizure admitted to the pediatric ward of Rasoul-e-Akram Hospital. The child seemed to be depressed, and in physical examination the only abnormal finding was pink discoid rashes on the cheeks. Brain Ct-Scan performed at the emergency department yielded no specific findings. In order to investigate the precise cause of focal seizure,...
